JLMLF Receives Phi Beta Sigma Social Action Award

The Lambda Sigma Chapter in Atlanta—Congressman Lewis’ chapter—held its spectacular Centennial Celebration in the Savanna Hall at Zoo Atlanta April 20th. The room at the black-tie event was a beautiful sea of blue and white—the fraternity’s colors—as members in white dinner jackets marked their 100 years of scholarship and community service.

In addition to its traditional awards, the chapter inaugurated a Social Action Award, presenting it to the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation. Centennial President Robert Eason explained the Lewises “spent their lifetimes marching for justice, fairness, inclusion and respect for the dignity and worth of every human being.” Our chapter is “proud to share the same values and aspirations.”

CEO Detria Everson and JLMLF Secretary Stephen McDaniel, a member of Lambda Sigma chapter, accepted the award on behalf of the foundation. Founding Board Member Lyn Vaughn Vann was also in attendance. Ms. Everson implored members to continue to work with the foundation to encourage youth civic engagement and to fight for passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Act which is stalled in Congress.

John Robert and Lillian Miles Lewis belonged to a fraternity and sorority in the famed group of African American organizations nicknamed the “Divine Nine.” Mrs. Lewis was a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Congressman Lewis was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The fraternity, founded in 1914, was near and dear to Mr. Lewis’ heart and the two-hundred-thousand-plus members of the 700 chapters of the international brotherhood are extremely proud to have had John Robert Lewis as a member.
